Which airports to use
Leaving South Florida. Miami International (MIA), about 8 miles west of downtown, has the most non-stops. Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood (FLL), roughly 25 miles north, is worth comparing because low-cost airlines often have cheaper fares there. From downtown Miami or Brickell, the Metrorail Orange Line runs straight to MIA. For FLL, Tri-Rail stops at the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport station, with a free shuttle to the terminals.
Arriving in New York. The right airport depends on where you are staying:
- LaGuardia (LGA) is closest to Midtown Manhattan. The free Q70 LaGuardia Link bus connects to the subway in Queens.
- JFK suits Brooklyn and Queens. AirTrain JFK connects to the subway and the Long Island Rail Road at Jamaica.
- Newark (EWR) works well for New Jersey and Manhattan’s West Side. AirTrain Newark connects to NJ Transit trains to Penn Station.
